Better With Mods
The only reason to buy Battletech, imo, is the mods. The mods are what saves this game from being boring, woke, garbage. Mods will grant you a much larger Inner Sphere map to play around in, in one mod package you'll even be able to, essentially, play with other players. It's not so much you'll be able to fight them, as you will be able to influence the same map everyone, using that mod, play on. That mod is Roguetech. There's also a mod called, Battletech Extended Commander's Edition. Which is a similar mod, without an online map and some mech packages. It should also be noted, that in order to play Roguetech you will have to use an older version of Battletech, as well as a few other mods.
However, given that Battletech is only better once mods are installed, the base game gets 3 stars from me. The game is meh, nothing special about it really. It's basically Mechwarrior Tactics Online, but looks nicer. (Sidenote, no, Battletech is not the first TBS game set in the Battletech universe. Apparently this was a point of contention for someone, so I guess it's worth mentioning here.) Anyway, this game does feature some woke elements, primarily in the gender of pilots. If that's an issue, don't worry, there's a mod to fix that. God bless modders. If you're a Battletech/Mechwarrior fan, get this game while it's on sale, and download some mods to make it perfect. If you're just looking for a TBS game, you can probably skip this one. All in all, Battletech is not a bad game, but it's not great either without mods. Mod the heck out of it.
